The Fasting Controversy
Fasting is a detox method that has gained some
popularity over the years, especially in the alternative medicine
industry. But it’s also been surrounded by some controversy, especially
in the U.S.
While many cultures around the world incorporate
fasting as a natural method of mental, physical, and spiritual
cleansing, some health professionals in this country are hesitant to
recommend it.
The Truth About Fasting
It’s not an especially effective method of
dieting, because it alters your metabolism in a way that actually may
make it harder for you to lose weight. And many people compensate for
the deprivation of the fast by increasing their caloric intake
afterward.
Fasting isn’t for everyone. Thin people who are
especially vulnerable to cold may have a much harder time than heavier
people. And if you’re very active, you should reconsider fasting, as you
won’t have enough energy to complete the activities you’re involved in.
Having said that, though, fasting can be a very
useful physical and psychological exercise in “priming” your body and
riding it of toxins. Some people report significant weight loss, even
with a short-term fast of one or two days.
Tips for Effective Fasting
-
Undergo a "pre-fast" diet before you begin.
During the pre-fast, gradually eliminate caffeine, dairy, and
alcohol from your diet. This is absolutely critical for preparing
the body. If you don’t do this step, you’re setting yourself up for
failure.
-
Keep your activity level low during the fast.
If you can, stay home and read, watch TV, etc.
-
Stay warm. You may need curl up with a
blanket.
-
Drink at least eight 8- to 12-oz glasses of
water or herbal tea. Consuming less can lead to headaches.
